“Goatfeathers are the distractions, sidelines and deflections that take a man’s attentions from his own business and keep him from getting ahead.”
Ellis Parker Butler – 1913
Many customers question the origin of our name. The owners, Eleanor and Pat Miller, travelled to Austria 20 years ago. While exploring all the country had to offer, they found themselves in a quaint restaurant. The walls were covered with famous (or infamous!) quotes from around the world. The “Goatfeathers” quote from renowned early 1900’s American satire author, Ellis Parker Butler, caught their eye. Eleanor grew up with a love for cooking. Pat with fishing fever! A great combination… The restaurant, when purchased in 1988, was named “Over The Market.” The Millers renamed it Goatfeathers in remembrance of their Austrian trip and Butler’s quote. They were honored to visit with Butler’s son over lunch at the restaurant four years ago as he relayed memorable information about his fathers and his books. Two of Mr. Butler’s original works are displayed in our lobby. We hope that your visit with us today will “distract” you with our delicious food, friendly staff and comfortable family atmosphere.
